VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has fulfilled his promise of donating two years’ salary towards the rehabilitation of traders affected by the devastating fire at Modern Market in Vasco, handing over financial assistance to the affected shopkeepers at a special programme held at Ravindra Bhavan on Thursday evening.
What makes the gesture significant is that the commitment was made on the very night of the tragedy. Salkar had rushed to the fire site as the blaze engulfed the market and reduced several shops to ashes. Moved by the scale of destruction and the plight of the traders, he had spontaneously announced that he would contribute two years of his salary towards helping them recover from their losses.
Keeping his word, the Vasco MLA distributed cheques to the affected shopkeepers on Thursday evening in the presence of the market association president and other committee members.
The massive fire destroyed merchandise and shop infrastructure worth lakhs of rupees, leaving several traders and their families struggling to recover from the financial losses. For many, the market was their primary source of livelihood, and the tragedy disrupted their daily earnings.
Salkar said the fire had deeply affected the trading community and that the immediate priority was to ensure that the affected shopkeepers received all possible support to get back on their feet.
“This is a small contribution from my side to help these traders overcome their losses. I understand the difficulties they are going through, particularly after losing their stocks and sources of livelihood in the fire. While the amount may not compensate for the losses they have suffered, I hope it will provide some support as they work towards rebuilding their businesses,” Salkar said.
The affected traders expressed their gratitude to Salkar for honouring his commitment and extending financial assistance from his personal earnings.
They appreciated the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of concern for the difficulties faced by the market community during a particularly challenging period.
For the traders now attempting to rebuild their businesses, the financial assistance comes as an additional source of support, offering some relief as they work towards restoring their livelihoods.
