PANAJI: The BJP leadership has moved to settle growing differences in Sanguem, with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and State BJP president Damu Naik meeting Minister Subhash Phal Dessai following concerns raised by party workers over ST reservation and related issues.
After the meeting, Phal Dessai said the concerns and misunderstandings among workers had been addressed. He maintained that there was no opposition to ST reservation, but said workers had wanted certain objections and other issues to be considered.
Phal Dessai said the matter had now been resolved and that BJP workers would support whoever the party decides to field in Sanguem, including an ST candidate.
The development assumes significance as the BJP seeks to maintain unity in Sanguem amid discussions over the political implications of ST reservation in the constituency.
Sawant described the dispute as an internal “family matter” that had been resolved. He said the interaction with Sanguem workers was fruitful and that the party would move ahead together.
On Phal Dessai’s political position, Sawant said the party would take a decision at the appropriate time, while stressing that development in Sanguem would continue.
Differences relating to the Curchorem constituency were also discussed and, according to Sawant, resolved during the meeting.
