PONDA: The Sanjeevani Sugar cane-producing farmers association led by Rajendra Desai today held a meeting at Sugar Factory premises at Dharbandora and expressed strong unhappiness over the Government not clearing their compensation amount.
Speaking to the media, Rajendra Desai said that when the 2020 government declared the Sugar Factory’s closure, the farmers met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and put the grievances of sugar cane-producing farmers before him.
He said the CM had assured to pay compensation amount for five years, and by that time government would also restart Sanjeevani Sugar Factory with a new product.
“The compensation for five years was decided with Rs 3000 per tonne for the first year, Rs 2800 for the second year, Rs 2600 for the third year, Rs 2400 for the fourth year and Rs 2200 for the fifth year according to considering their previous records for the supply of sugar cane to sugar factory as a base to determine compensation,” he said.
However, he lamented after paying compensation for the year 2020-21, the Government had not cleared them compensation for the next year. Further, many farmers are paid only 80 per cent, and the 20 per cent amount is still pending.
He said the farmers are also uncertain about the launching of Ethanol plant by the Agriculture Department as they were not asked to go for sugarcane cultivation despite it is now the season for growing cultivation. Farmers questioned whether the Government is serious about starting ethanol production at Sugar Factory?
With regard to the Government’s plan to set up truck terminus, the farmers said they are not opposing if it would fetch revenue, but the first Government should pay their compensation as well as start an ethanol plant for the survival of sugar cane farmers failing which warned to start agitation from 24 November for their demands.
