VALPOI: On the 75th year of India’s Independence, the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr Pramod Sawant, announced to give 16,000 litres of water free to all Goans
Though the announcement has been welcomed, many villagers have also questioned how they would benefit?
In Sattari taluka, even today water supply to a larger extent is through tankers.
Locals questioned how they would account for the tanker supply? How would the locals benefit?
Citizens say that 30 per cent of Sattari taluka will not benefit from this scheme.
Villagers say that the CM’s announcement was direct competition with the Aam Aadmi Party, which had announced 300 units of water free.
Locals allege the announcement was made with politics in mind.
Since liberation in 1961, Sattari is facing acute water issues, which has not to be sorted to date. In 30 per cent of villages, water is still being supplied through tankers.
“Suppose the government supplies water to such a large number of families where water is being provided through tankers. There is chances of huge corruption as accounting of such a large amount of water through tankers is next to impossible,” said locals.
This will give rise to major corruption scams in the water supply, they said.
A local said in many villages, water supply is the alternate day, and in some villages, the supply is only 100 litres a day.
They say the government must first supply water at full capacity.
“Otherwise, the government’s plan to provide free water in Sattari taluka will remain only on paper,” they said.
