Panaji: Aam Aadmi Party today hailed retired Justice U V Bakre’s decision not to accept the position of Lokayukta in Goa and said his decision just proves that people of merit would not want to be mere cheerleaders to hold a “decorative post of a toothless Lokayukta”.
AAP Goa Convener Rahul Mhambre had tweeted on 11th February that the Lokayukta in Goa is reduced to being a cheerleader and a toothless tiger and further added that “na khaonga na khane doonga” is reduced to one of the many jumlas.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant amended the Lokayukta Act in January this year which had raised a lot of controversies with a cross section of the society objecting to the amendments and arguing that they will render the Lokayukta to be “toothless tiger taking on the task of being a mere cheerleader”,
On 5th March Dr Pramod had written to Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat informing him that he was considering appointing Justice Bakre as the new Lokayukta and Digambar had responded by stating that the powers of Goa Lokayukta have been diluted making it toothless.
Justice Bakre who had earlier given his consent to accept the position has now withdrawn the consent and this is the right decision that would be taken up by any person with integrity and honesty said Rahul.
