CURCHOREM: Two toddlers tragically died in the Salaulim canal in Betmoddi-Bonsai, Curchorem, on Saturday afternoon. The children were playing when they went about 50 meters from their rental home and fell into the canal, according to the Curchorem police.
Rehan Sadik Shrittey, a 15-month-old Karnataka native, and Wajid Ashpak Hashmi, an 18-month-old Uttar Pradesh native, have been identified as the victims. The children were taken around two kilometers from the scene of the incident after falling into the river.
Luckily, a few locals spotted them and were able to pull both kids out of the water. Soon after they left the region, their family learned of their abduction, which sparked a desperate search that finally found the kids in the canal.
According to police, one body was discovered about 12:30 pm, and the second one was discovered not long after. After being taken to the Curchorem health center, both youngsters were tragically pronounced dead.
The two children lived in a leased room close to Betmoddi-Bonsai, Curchorem, and were from separate households. The mothers of both victims were frequent visitors to the canal, where families renting apartments frequently laundered their clothes, according to the Curchorem.
About 11 families have been residing in the region for a few months, according to the police, and the majority of the men work as laborers in Curchorem. The ladies were at home on the day of the incident, while their husbands were at work.
After hearing the news, the fathers of the departed children, who had been laborers in Verna, went back to their homes. The two youngsters fell into the canal after wandering 50 meters from their rented room while playing with eight other kids earlier that morning. The children chose to approach the canal from the front because they were unable to scale the wall in the rear of the rented property, which is barely 30 meters from the canal, according to the police.
Children may have unintentionally fallen into the water, according to authorities. At Betmaddi, a bystander noticed the kids floating in the canal and informed the nearby people. Both children’s bodies were recovered and transferred to the hospital, where medical staff pronounced them dead.
