PANAJI: Since 2020, the State government of Goa has invested more than Rs 2.5 crore in the renovation of court buildings. Some people still experience issues in spite of this, especially during the monsoon.
Shortly after its opening in March 2021, the government also acknowledged flaws with the state-of-the-art High Court building at Porvorim. According to Aleixo Sequeira, Minister of Law and Judiciary, the contractor is doing the renovations and repairs under the defect responsibility period on its own dime. But despite these problems happening, no inquiries have been opened into them.
The structure was built at a cost of Rs 115 crore, and Deputy Solicitor General of India Advocate Pravin Faldessai was the first to draw attention to its predicament, claiming that it began exhibiting structural issues during its first monsoon, just two months after it was dedicated.
He also listed issues including water seepage, leaks, slick flooring, waterlogging in the hallways, the collapse of fake ceilings in multiple locations on the second level, etc. in a letter to the GSIDC. Not long later, the repairs got underway.
Meanwhile, the minister revealed that the government paid Rs 4 lakh for pre-monsoon maintenance of the POCSO Court in response to an unstarred question posed by Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao.
The Civil and Criminal Court Building in Margao’s roof repairs accounted for the largest outlay of Rs 80.56 lakh. Galvalume sheets were installed, wooden roof components were replaced, and Mangalore tiles were replaced.
Similarly, the Civil and Criminal Court in Vasco spent Rs 80.33 lakh employing the same methods to fix roof leaks. The
