PANAJI: St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Aldona, secured the Under 19 Football Zone I championship with a hard fought victory over St. Francis Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Siolim, at Quitula Ground on September 1.
The final, organised under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Panaji, ended 1-1 after regulation time, with both teams producing a competitive display filled with determination and attacking intent. St. Thomas HSS Aldona held its nerve during the decisive tie breaker, eventually winning 4-2 to lift the Zone I title.
The victory sparked celebrations at the Aldona institution, with the school management praising the players for their discipline, commitment and teamwork throughout the competition.
Principal Angelica Fernandes expressed pride in the team’s achievement, highlighting the players’ composure and dedication in a high pressure final. Manager Fr. Roxy Fernandes also congratulated the squad, stressing the importance of discipline, teamwork and confidence in achieving success on the sporting field.
The school acknowledged the contribution of Physical Education Teacher R. J. Vijaykumar and coach Somshekar.K for their consistent training, guidance and motivation. Their efforts played an important role in preparing the players for the tournament and helping them remain focused during crucial moments.
The school management, staff and students extended their congratulations to the entire squad and wished the players continued success in the upcoming rounds.
The Zone I triumph adds another achievement to St. Thomas HSS Aldona’s sporting record and underlines the institution’s emphasis on developing students through sports, leadership, discipline and teamwork alongside academics.
