Panaji:
North Goa Lok Sabha Congress candidate Ramakant Khalap called for the resignation of Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar over the death of linesman Manoj Zambaulikar.
Zambaulikar died on Thursday after he had climbed the pole to rectify a fault when the power was accidentally turned on resulting in his instant death.
“In the past five years, more than 70 people have lost their lives due to electrocution. Additionally, 25-30 animals have also died due to electric shocks. I condemn this lethargic attitude of the electricity department and the lack of safety measures.
“Is the government ready to take responsibility for these deaths? You, Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar, have shown the people and the department bad days during your tenure, even though there is a SUDIN (MEANING GOOD DAY) in your name.
Khalap said that despite the government raising the electricity tariff manifold the infrastructure continued to remain pathetic resulting in frequent power cuts, shortage of equipment and now deaths of linesmen,” Khalap said.
“There are also many instances of valuable machinery such as refrigerators, and TVs being damaged due to power fluctuations. In the last five years, Rs 12,000 crore has been spent on electricity,” he added.
He pointed out how former governor Satyapal Malik had criticized the government and directly accused it of “commission raj”.
You keep a close eye on where the other goes wrong, but you keep your mistakes under wrap. This is the irresponsible attitude of the government. Resign and take responsibility or it won’t take long for your government to suffer from the same shock as the people of Goa,” Khalap said.
