PORVORIM: Power Minister Ramkrishna “Sudin” Dhavalikar stated that the Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Limited has carried out the project in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives and is not to support Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the State.
In response to Claude Alvares, the director of the Goa Foundation, alleging that the government is laying the foundation for five Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Goa through Tamnar, Dhavalikar urged Alvares to meet with representatives of the Electricity Department and obtain the necessary data regarding the project.
Dhavalikar stated that Adv Prashant Bhushan, the Goa Foundation’s attorney, had argued before the Supreme Court during the hearing that there could be no objection to the Central Empowered Committee’s (CEC) recommendations regarding the realignment of the transmission line being implemented.
He also said that Goa’s electricity needs are growing and would soon approach 1,200 MW, which makes the Tamnar power transmission line necessary.
CEC of SC conducted an investigation and on April 23, 2021, submitted its report. In its report, the CEC suggested that the proposed 400 kV line in Goa should be drawn along the existing 220 kV corridor line after establishing 400 kV corridor connectivity between Mapusa and Sangod and the 220 kV line between Sangod and Xeldem.
This is in place of clearing the canopy of virgin forest cover along a 10.50-km long corridor with 46 m ROW. This line of action would guarantee the southern Goa region with a sufficient supply of power, as stated by CEC.
Additionally, while the 400 kV line between Narendra and Sangod is being built, the 100 MW of power that is now received from Ramagundam through the 220 kV line would be momentarily interrupted.
