MARGAO: The Presidents of the North and South Goa Taxi Unions, along with union members, met with South Goa Member of Parliament Viriato Fernandes on Thursday at the South Goa District Collector’s Office to raise concerns regarding disparities in taxi fare structures across the state.
During the meeting, taxi operators highlighted the ongoing issue of unequal fare systems between app-based taxi services and traditional taxis. They urged the MP to push for a uniform fare policy that would ensure equal business opportunities for all taxi operators in Goa, regardless of the platform used.
Union leaders expressed frustration over the growing dominance of app-based services, stating that inconsistent fare regulations have created an uneven playing field, adversely impacting the livelihood of traditional taxi drivers.
MP Viriato Fernandes assured the delegation that their grievances would be taken seriously. He committed to raising the matter in the upcoming session of Parliament and further promised to write to the Prime Minister, drawing attention to the challenges faced by the taxi industry in Goa.
The meeting concluded with the taxi union members expressing hope that their longstanding concerns would finally be addressed at the national level.
