PANAJI: Agacaim Police have booked an 18-year-old student for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the fatal Siridao Flyover crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old passenger and left two others injured.
The case was registered on the complaint of HC Uday Palkar on behalf of the State. According to police, the accused, Harsh Shrenik Jain (18), a resident of Aquem, Margao, was driving a Ford EcoSport from Panaji towards Agacaim at around 3.45 am on August 1 when the incident occurred.
Police alleged that the accused was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol in a rash and negligent manner, endangering human life. On reaching the beginning of the Siridao Flyover near Sainik Aaramghar on NH-66, he allegedly lost control of the SUV on a curve and crashed into the crash barrier. The impact caused the vehicle to plunge from the flyover onto the service road below, where it caught fire.
The driver sustained injuries in the crash. Another occupant, Tanish Puri (18) of Raia, suffered bodily injuries, while Yash Mehta (19) of Margao sustained grievous injuries and was declared brought dead at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
Police have registered offences against the accused, and further investigation is in progress.
