The Monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly started with chaos and disruption, with the Opposition falling into the ruling government’s trap.
The crucial Question Hour was lost on the first day as MLAs engaged in a heated Breach of Privilege debate. The ruling benches demanded an apology from Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa for moving a resolution on the Schedule Tribe Reservation, leading to a chaotic scene and multiple adjournments by the Speaker.
Surprisingly, it was the ruling benches that seemed to be disrupting the House, while the Opposition fell into their trap. Instead of engaging in meaningful discussions on important issues such as the National Education Policy (NEP) and Power Tariff Hike, the Opposition got caught up in unnecessary confrontations.
The question arises: why did the opposition play into the hands of the ruling party? It’s evident that by creating a ruckus, the Opposition only served to disrupt the functioning of the House, instead of focusing on important matters.
Had the opposition chosen to swiftly address the demands of the ruling benches, the House could have functioned smoothly, and crucial questions could have been addressed.
This pattern continued on the following day, resulting in further loss of crucial time as the Speaker was forced to adjourn the House once again. The outcome is clear: it is the Opposition that is at a loss, rather than the government.
The actions of the Opposition raise concerns about their strategic decision-making and ability to prioritize the welfare of the people. By getting entangled in unnecessary altercations, they not only failed to address vital issues but also provided a convenient distraction for the ruling dispensation.
It is imperative for the opposition to reassess its approach and focus on constructive participation in legislative proceedings. Instead of falling into the trap set by the ruling government, the opposition should direct its efforts towards effectively representing the interests of the public.
This turn of events serves as a cautionary tale, underlining the importance of strategic decision-making and maintaining focus on issues that directly impact the citizens of Goa. As representatives of the people, the opposition must prioritize constructive engagement and ensure that crucial matters are given the attention they deserve.
The disruptions in the Goa Legislative Assembly highlight the need for a more strategic and focused approach from the Opposition. By avoiding unnecessary confrontations and prioritizing the discussion of important issues, the Opposition can effectively contribute to the legislative process and better serve the interests of the public.
There are several critical issues concerning Goa right now, the Mhadei issue – Karnataka CM meeting teh Prime Minister, and the landslide on NH66 at Pernem – The opposition could have demanded heads to roll, the Kala Academy issue – Opposition should demand accountability, the Power tariff issue – when the government says it has made profit why did it increase tariff?
If the crucial time is lost in unnecessary debates, who will take up the public issues?
Is the Opposition hand-in-glove with the government? It is the million-dollar question.
