New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajiv Shukla has defended the Indian team’s selection process following Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international debut, saying the teenager’s inclusion reflects a merit based system rather than decisions influenced by public opinion or social media criticism.
Sooryavanshi made his India debut in the second T20I against England, becoming the youngest player to represent the country in international cricket at the age of 15 years and 99 days. The left handed opener had previously been left out of the Ireland series and the opening T20I against England as the team management continued to back the established top order of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.
Shukla said there had been considerable criticism on social media over the youngster not receiving an opportunity, but maintained that the selectors and team management always intended to include him when they felt the timing was appropriate. He added that the decision to hand Sooryavanshi his debut was the right one and expressed confidence that the youngster would establish himself in international cricket.
The teenager made an encouraging start to his career, scoring 14 runs from just 10 balls. His innings included two sixes and showcased the aggressive batting style that earned him national selection after a record breaking IPL 2026 campaign with the Rajasthan Royals.
Despite Sooryavanshi’s promising debut, India suffered a four wicket defeat as England successfully chased down a target of 191 to take a 1-0 lead in the five match T20I series. Jacob Bethell played a key role in the successful chase, guiding the hosts to victory in Manchester.
The focus will now shift to the remaining matches of the series, with India hoping the young opener can build on his debut performance while the team looks to level the contest against England.
