COLVALE: A container truck believed to be transporting a clandestine consignment of liquor bottles caught fire on the Mapusa-Colvale highway on Tuesday, triggering a dramatic scene but causing no injuries.
According to eye witnesses, the fire erupted suddenly, engulfing the vehicle’s cabin in flames. Locals attempted to douse the fire but were unsuccessful, and the cabin was completely destroyed before fire and emergency services arrived to bring the situation under control.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene shortly after the blaze began, raising doubts about the legality of the cargo. Authorities suspect that the liquor was being transported without valid permits or documentation.
Police have registered a case and initiated a search operation to trace the absconding driver. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined and is being probed. Investigators are also working to uncover the origin and intended destination of the suspected illegal shipment.
