PANAJI: The Travel and Tourism Authority of Goa (TTAG) today has welcomed the state government’s move to allow access to low-risk waterfalls for tourists with all safeguards in place.
“TTAG would like to thank the state government for giving access to waterfalls with all safeguards in Place. This will ensure that the incomes of local businesses catering to such activities are sustained while also allowing Locals and Tourists to enjoy the Natural Beauty of our Forests,” said TTAG in a press statement.
GFDC Chairman Dr Deviya Rane convened a productive meeting in the presence of Ganesh Gaonkar,Chairman of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, with officials from GFDC and GTDC.
“We deliberated on regularizing trekking at Dudhsagar Waterfalls, which is currently closed due to monsoon,” said Rane
She further said that the entry process for trekking will be streamlined through an online portal, and the guides on duty will receive specialized training to ensure the utmost safety of tourists.
“GTDC will draw up a comprehensive proposal in this regard. Our agenda is to prioritize the safety of visitors while protecting the environment,” she said
Rane said that to this end, we will frame standard operating procedures (SOPs) for guides as well.
The government’s decision to maintain access to low-risk waterfalls comes amid debates regarding the feasibility of a blanket ban on waterfall access during the monsoon.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte criticised the initial ban, arguing that it overlooked the interests of tourism stakeholders.
“We promote monsoon tourism, and waterfalls are a significant draw for tourists and locals alike,” Khaunte stated.
He suggested designating specific waterfalls for visitation rather than imposing sweeping restrictions.
