MARGAO: Former Margao MLA Uday Bhembre has opposed the Goa Government’s proposed Anti-Conversion Bill, questioning the need for such legislation in the State.
Bhembre said the proposed legislation appears to be part of what he described as an RSS agenda being pursued by the BJP in states where it is in power.
He argued that Goa does not require a separate anti-conversion law as there is no evidence of widespread forced or unlawful religious conversions in the State.
According to Bhembre, if genuine cases arise where a person is being forcibly converted against their will, the government can take appropriate legal action or introduce legislation specifically dealing with such instances.
However, he maintained that forced conversion is not a prevalent issue in Goa and therefore questioned the need for a separate Anti-Conversion Bill.
