An unidentified male person, estimated to be between 55-60 years of age, was found dead near the Our Lady of Vailankanni Chapel, beside the railway tracks in the drainage area below the Vasco-Sada bridge.
The incident came to light after a phone call was received by the Vasco police from a local resident, Braganza, informing them of a person lying unconscious near the location. Police personnel rushed to the spot and found the man in an unconscious state with visible head and body injuries, believed to have resulted from a fall from the Vasco-Sada bridge.
A 108 ambulance was called to the scene and the injured man was shifted to the Sub District Hospital, Chicalim. However, the Medical Officer on duty declared him brought dead.
A panchanama was conducted over the body, which has since been preserved at the South Goa District Hospital morgue in Margao for medico-legal formalities.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased was a beggar known to frequent the city area and was often found under the influence of alcohol. Police suspect that the man may have accidentally fallen off the bridge due to the absence of a protective crash guard or barrier, leading to fatal injuries.
Vasco police have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further enquiry is being conducted by PSI Mayur Sawant under the supervision of PI Kapil Nayak and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
