New Delhi: The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified sharply on Sunday after both sides launched fresh military strikes across the Gulf region, escalating tensions over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Iran claimed it had destroyed part of the US military’s drone fleet stationed in Bahrain, while Washington announced a new wave of precision strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
The US Central Command said its forces struck dozens of targets across multiple locations in Iran to weaken Tehran’s ability to threaten international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The operation reportedly targeted air defence systems, coastal radar installations, missile and drone capabilities, as well as small naval vessels. American forces also deployed one way attack aerial and sea drones during the operation, marking their first use in the ongoing conflict.
US President Donald Trump said the strikes inflicted significant damage, adding that Iran’s military infrastructure had been hit hard during the latest operation.
Iran responded by launching attacks on several American military bases across the Gulf, including installations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck helicopter maintenance facilities, a hangar housing a P-8 surveillance aircraft and a US drone command centre in Bahrain. Iranian media also reported attacks on American military facilities in Kuwait.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of destroying recent diplomatic efforts, stating that the latest strikes had undermined attempts to reduce regional tensions and restore stability. Tehran also argued that US military action had disrupted maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, the violence spread inside Iran, where officials reported that one person was killed and four others were injured after a projectile struck an agricultural water pumping station in Mahshahr. Explosions were also reported near military and strategic facilities across Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Sistan-Baluchestan provinces, highlighting the widening scope of the confrontation and increasing fears of further escalation across the region.
