“Success Of Our Foreign Policy”: Omar Abdullah Hails Pahalgam Mention In BRICS Declaration

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has described the inclusion of the Pahalgam terror attack in the BRICS New Delhi Declaration as a significant achievement for India’s foreign policy.
Abdullah made the remarks on Tuesday after BRICS leaders unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration at the 18th BRICS Summit held in the national capital. He highlighted the fact that the attack was specifically mentioned despite the presence of countries that maintain close ties with Pakistan.
“The fact that Pahalgam itself was condemned is a big thing. Please see how many allies of Pakistan were in that room. Therefore, for even Pahalgam to be mentioned by name, that in itself is a success of our foreign policy,” Abdullah said.
When asked why Pakistan was not explicitly named in the declaration, Abdullah said that question should be addressed to the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The BRICS leaders adopted the declaration unanimously during the summit, which was held in New Delhi from September 12 to 13. The document covers a wide range of issues involving international security, economic cooperation, global governance and development.
On terrorism, the declaration states that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation or perpetrator. It also calls for zero tolerance towards terrorism, accountability for those responsible and action against terrorist financing networks and safe havens.
A specific section strongly condemns the April 22, 2025, terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed and several others injured.
The Pahalgam attack had become a major point of tension between India and Pakistan and was followed by a sharp escalation between the two countries.
The BRICS declaration’s reference to the attack is significant because the consensus included China, which has close strategic ties with Pakistan. However, the document did not name Pakistan or attribute responsibility for the attack to any particular country.
Abdullah focused on the collective condemnation rather than the absence of Pakistan’s name, saying the inclusion of Pahalgam itself was important given the composition of the BRICS grouping.
The declaration also reiterates the bloc’s broader position against terrorism in all forms and supports efforts towards the early adoption of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.
