New Delhi: India has strongly criticised remarks amplified by former US President Donald Trump after he reposted content that described India in derogatory terms. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the comments were uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste, making it clear that such views do not reflect the reality of India’s relationship with the United States.
The response followed Trump’s sharing of material from Michael Savage, who, during an episode of his podcast Savage Nation, used offensive language while discussing the United States’ birthright citizenship policy. In his remarks, Savage referred to countries including India in disparaging terms and made controversial claims about immigrants, drawing sharp reactions.
In its official statement, the government emphasised that ties between India and the US have long been built on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and strategic cooperation. It underscored that such remarks fail to represent the strength and depth of the partnership between the two nations.
The controversy has also triggered a political response within India. The Indian National Congress criticised the comments as deeply offensive and called for a formal response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party accused the government of not reacting strongly enough to repeated statements targeting India.
The issue gained further attention as Trump’s repost also included criticism of the US Supreme Court’s discussions on birthright citizenship, alongside support for calls demanding a national referendum on the policy. This has added a broader political dimension to the controversy in the United States as well.
Despite the sharp exchange, India maintained that the overall bilateral relationship remains strong and grounded in long standing cooperation across sectors, including trade, defence, and global diplomacy. The government’s response signals a firm stance against remarks it considers disrespectful, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining stable and constructive international relations.
