PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated the Vacuum Sewer Network System for the low-lying areas of Panaji, including parts of Mala and the St. Inez Creek region.
This state-of-the-art project, which has been implemented under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), aims to provide sustainable and efficient sewage management solutions to over 200 households in these areas.
Goa becomes the first state to engage this modern technology to address the sewerage concerns in the low-lying areas of the Capital City of Panaji.
This project is addressing one of Panaji’s longstanding challenges of waste management. Panaji is a cultural, historical, and tourism hub that attracts visitors from across the world, in addition to being the capital city and housing most of the businesses and offices. However, with growth comes challenges, and today, the Government of Goa has taken a major step forward in ensuring that the capital city’s infrastructure matches its tourism appeal as well as its sustainability for the locals.
Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has stated that the Fully Automated Vacuum Sewer Network System is set to significantly enhance sanitation and improve the quality of life for residents in low-lying areas in the city, while also preserving our natural environment.
HCM also informed that the ₹8.52 crore project will resolve the pressing issue of sewage management in low-lying regions, where traditional gravity-based sewer systems could not be implemented due to geographical constraints such as high-water tables and narrow lanes. He further stated that the overall budget of the project is inclusive of the 5 year maintenance of the newly fit technology.
The vacuum technology, which operates at shallow depths and requires minimal excavation, offers a modern and innovative solution that is entirely sealed, preventing groundwater infiltration and ensuring that sewage is safely transported to treatment plants. This system is designed to handle adverse conditions like monsoons and high tides, which often create difficulties in these areas.
Chief Minister Dr. Sawant further highlighted the environmental benefits of this project, stating, “The St. Inez Creek, which flows into the Mandovi River, is a vital water body for Goa. By preventing the discharge of untreated sewage into the creek, we are taking a significant step towards rejuvenating and preserving this natural resource for future generations.”
The project also reflects the success of public-private partnerships in delivering crucial infrastructure. The Chief Minister commended the Public Works Department (PWD), the implementing agencies, and the local community for their collective efforts in bringing this project to fruition.
This Vacuum Sewer Network System is part of the broader mission to elevate Panaji’s position under the Smart Cities Mission. The project complements ongoing initiatives aimed at improving public health, sanitation, road networks, and other essential services in Panaji.
The Chief Minister assured residents that this is just the beginning of the Government’s efforts to improve urban infrastructure in Panaji, promising continued focus on sustainable and long-term solutions to enhance public health and hygiene.
The Government of Goa remains committed to ensuring that every citizen benefits from modern and efficient infrastructure, building a cleaner, greener, and smarter Panaji.
