Panaji: The Goa Veterans Cricket Association (GVCA) is set to host the third edition of the GVCA Veterans Cricket Tournament from November 13 to 15 at the SAG Chicalim and GCA Porvorim grounds. Ahead of the event, GVCA President and Secretary of the Board of Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI), Vinod Phadke, shared his vision for strengthening the structure and visibility of veterans’ cricket in the state.
Phadke outlined plans to create a more organized and sustainable framework for senior players through regular tournaments, improved facilities, and wider participation. “We want to ensure that those who have contributed to the sport continue to enjoy competitive cricket with proper infrastructure and encouragement,” he said.
Established to provide opportunities for players who, despite their dedication, couldn’t make it to the state’s Ranji squad, the GVCA has become a valuable platform for keeping their passion for cricket alive. Through initiatives such as the Indian Veterans Premier League (IVPL), local players have even shared the field with renowned international stars like Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, and Suresh Raina.
“Seeing our players compete alongside such legends is a moment of great pride,” Phadke remarked, noting that three Goan veterans featured in various IVPL franchises last year.
Under Phadke’s leadership, GVCA has worked closely with the BVCI to host several interstate and zonal tournaments, including a successful national event in Goa in 2023. He acknowledged the support of the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) and its president Mahesh Dessai for their continued assistance in overcoming logistical challenges and ensuring the smooth conduct of tournaments.
Looking ahead, Phadke confirmed plans to bring more national-level veterans’ cricket tournaments to Goa, integrating sports development with tourism promotion. “Veterans’ cricket keeps seasoned players engaged with the game, inspires young athletes, and preserves the enduring spirit of cricket across generations,” he said.
