PANAJI: St. André MLA and Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) leader Viresh Borkar led a delegation of residents to the Electricity Department at Vidyut Bhavan, Panaji, demanding immediate relief for consumers affected by rising electricity bills.
The delegation submitted a representation highlighting the financial burden caused by what it described as inflated electricity bills, particularly on households, senior citizens, farmers, fishermen, small businesses and middle-class families.
Borkar called for an immediate inquiry into abnormal billing, verification of meter readings, correction of erroneous bills and the establishment of a transparent, time-bound grievance redressal mechanism for consumers.
The MLA also urged the government to reduce the per-unit electricity tariff, stating that the increasing cost of electricity has become unaffordable for many families.
In addition, Borkar demanded that the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) convene a public hearing on the recent electricity tariff hike, allowing consumers, elected representatives, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to present their concerns before any tariff revision is implemented.
Speaking after the meeting, Borkar said electricity is an essential service and that consumers deserve fair tariffs, transparent billing and an opportunity to be heard before additional financial burdens are imposed on them.
He reiterated his commitment to pursuing the matter until affected consumers receive meaningful relief and assured the people of St. André that he would continue to raise the issue with the concerned authorities.
