New Delhi: Delhi Capitals’ campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 suffered a setback after a heavy defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, with team management pointing to a disappointing start with the bat as the key reason.
Chasing a daunting target of 243, Delhi Capitals struggled to build early momentum. The opening pair of KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka failed to deliver the explosive start required in a high-scoring contest. Nissanka fell early, while Rahul, despite a promising season, managed 37 runs without fully taking control of the innings.
Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao highlighted the underwhelming Powerplay as a decisive factor. The team managed just 59 runs in the first six overs, well below the expected benchmark for such a steep chase. He noted that a total closer to 80 or 90 during that phase could have kept the team in contention, especially given the batting depth available.
At number three, Nitish Rana showed some resistance with a quick half-century but struggled initially, which further slowed the innings. Rahul also faced limited deliveries during the Powerplay after the early wicket, preventing him from settling into a rhythm. The imbalance in strike distribution, according to the team management, shifted momentum in favour of Hyderabad.
The match also saw tactical decisions come under scrutiny, including the use of Rana as a bowling option ahead of specialist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. However, the team defended the decision, stating that such calls are made in real time based on on-field situations.
Fielding lapses compounded Delhi’s problems. Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma, who went on to score a match-defining century, was handed multiple reprieves. Missed run-out chances and dropped catches proved costly, allowing him to dominate the game.
With this loss, Delhi Capitals now sit mid-table, reflecting an inconsistent run in the tournament so far.
