New Delhi: India’s hopes of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games received a clearer roadmap after the International Olympic Committee announced that the host city for the event will be chosen by the middle of 2029 under a newly restructured selection process.
The timeline was confirmed during the IOC Session in Lausanne, where officials unveiled a revised three stage framework aimed at making the bidding process more transparent, predictable and financially sustainable for prospective hosts.
With Los Angeles set to host the 2028 Olympics and Brisbane already confirmed as the venue for the 2032 edition, the 2036 Games represent the next available opportunity for countries seeking to stage the Summer Olympics.
Under the revamped system, a new Strategic Dialogue phase will be introduced in March 2027. During this stage, interested bidders will be required to submit detailed questionnaires, financial assurances and plans demonstrating cost control measures and infrastructure readiness before advancing further in the race.
The reforms are designed to provide governments and organising committees with greater certainty regarding timelines and requirements, while allowing more time to secure public support and complete planning processes.
India, which formally submitted its intention to host the Games in 2024, is currently participating in the Continuous Dialogue phase of the process. Ahmedabad remains the proposed host city for the country’s bid to bring the Olympics to India for the first time.
The next stage, known as the Targeted Dialogue phase, is expected to begin in 2028 for shortlisted candidates. Those selected will be required to update their proposals and submit a full set of guarantees covering financing, infrastructure and operational commitments.
The final decision on the host city for the 2036 Olympic Games will be taken during an IOC session scheduled for mid 2029, marking a crucial milestone for India’s long standing ambition of staging the world’s biggest sporting event.
