MARGAO: Fifteen additional lakes will be designated as protected wetlands by the Goa State Wetland Authority. The decision is an important step in protecting the state’s delicate aquatic ecosystems and was made at a recent meeting of the reconstituted body.
The first ten lakes will be formally designated as wetlands on Friday, and the remaining five lakes will be notified soon after, according to Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira. The Wetland Authority is working to identify and protect between 40 and 44 wetlands throughout the state.
Panchami, Karmali, Kodal, Kolamwada, Sancoale, Panval, Saipem, Talauli, and Betal lakes are among the lakes that will be designated as wetlands. Ita Lake, Manali Lake, Adsuke Lake, Dulpe Lake, and Orlim Lake are the next five lakes to be included in the list.
“We are making steady progress toward our goal,” Sequeira declared. “The balance will require a little more time, but the notification for 10 lakes should be sent out as early as this Friday.
However, we are moving forward, and we have located between 40 and 44 locations that should be designated as wetlands,” he stated. In accordance with the 2017 Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, the state had already notified 15 wetlands.
