PANAJI: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has decided to put alliance talks on hold and instead focus on strengthening its organisation ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections. The party also announced that it will intensify its agitation against the BJP-led government while preparing to contest the elections independently.
Addressing the media after a meeting of the party’s Political Affairs Committee, GFP President and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said the party was no longer willing to wait indefinitely for opposition alliance discussions to conclude.
“We are fed up with the uncertainty over alliance talks. One day the discussions move forward, and the next day they come to a halt. Our priority is to defeat the BJP, and we will strengthen our organisation while taking our fight to the people,” Sardesai said.
The party has resolved to expand its presence across all 40 Assembly constituencies. As part of the organisational drive, district-level meetings have been scheduled across North Goa, South Goa and the newly created Kushawati district to strengthen the party at the grassroots.
Taking a swipe at the Congress, Sardesai alleged that the party had failed the people of Goa in the past.
“The issue is not about invitations for meetings. The real issue is that the people of Goa believe the Congress has cheated them twice, and they fear it could happen a third time. To prevent that, we will go to the streets, fight independently and work for the people of Goa,” he said.
GFP General Secretary Mohandas Lolienkar said the party had consciously decided to suspend alliance discussions after repeated delays.
“Congress has a habit of taking alliance talks right up to the final stage before elections. We have experienced this in the past as well. Therefore, we have decided to keep the talks on hold and focus on strengthening our organisation,” Lolienkar said.
Sardesai reiterated that the Goa Forward Party would soon launch a series of public agitations against the BJP government while simultaneously building the party organisation in preparation for the 2027 Assembly elections.
