New Delhi: India men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has strongly dismissed ongoing rumours about a rift between him and team captain Rohit Sharma, calling them baseless and driven by a thirst for attention and viewership.
Speaking at the ABP India At 2047 Summit, Gambhir took aim at self-proclaimed experts and certain YouTubers, accusing them of spreading misinformation for TRP gains. The speculations about a strained relationship reportedly surfaced after India’s defeat in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, despite the team’s recent Champions Trophy triumph in March under the leadership of both Gambhir and Rohit.
“First of all, who are these people? Where are these stories coming from? Just because someone on YouTube or a self-proclaimed expert says something for views, it doesn’t make it true,” Gambhir asserted. “We won the Champions Trophy just two months ago. If we hadn’t, imagine the kind of questions you’d be asking me. A coach and captain lift a trophy together, and now suddenly, people want to create drama?”
Gambhir emphasized that his relationship with Rohit Sharma is built on mutual respect and a shared dedication to Indian cricket. “I respect him deeply — the person he is and what he’s contributed to Indian cricket. That respect has existed since the beginning of his career, and it will remain unchanged,” he said.
The coach concluded by urging content creators and media personalities to be more responsible. “If you’re asking these questions just to boost views or subscribers, maybe do some proper research first,” Gambhir added.
India’s next major assignment is a five-match Test series in England, starting June 20, following the conclusion of the ongoing IPL season.
