In recent years, Goa Police has garnered an alarming reputation due to the alleged involvement of some personnel in various drug-related controversies.
The notorious police-politicians-drugs nexus, especially highlighted by the tragic case of British teenager Scarlett’s rape and murder in 2010-11, has raised significant questions regarding the integrity of the state’s law enforcement.
Among the names that surfaced during these investigations is Police Inspector Sunil Gudlar, currently stationed at the Konkan Railway police station.
His recent activities have reignited the public’s concern over the accountability and integrity of those sworn to protect the people.
On Monday, Gudlar was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs 25000 from a beef trader.
This latest incident underscores a pattern of questionable behaviour rather than an isolated event. Many remember a past case involving the now-discharged Israeli national David Driham, also known as Dudu, wherein Gudlar was implicated in a conspiracy that involved fabricating charges against him.
The North Goa Additional Sessions Court had previously ordered charges against several individuals, including Gudlar and former Deputy Superintendent of Police Naresh Mhamal, further fueling public outrage and concern.
One must question the rationale behind PI Gudlar’s continued presence within the police force despite these serious allegations. How can someone involved in such a significant scandal be allowed to operate within a position of authority?
This situation raises profound questions about accountability and the lack of punitive measures for those who violate their oath.
Adding to the public discontent, there have been numerous reports of a liquor racket running from Margao Railway station, in which allegations of police complicity have circulated.
This only perpetuates the perception that some members of the Goa Police Force may be more interested in self-serving activities rather than upholding the law and serving the citizens of the state.
The responsibility for cleansing the Goa Police lies with the state’s leadership. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has the power to influence change within a system that seems to be plagued by corruption and inefficiency.
The question remains, will he take decisive action to ensure that individuals like Gudlar are removed from positions of power?
Individuals with a history of unethical conduct should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of not only the police force but the larger image of Goa itself.
In an era where transparency and accountability are critical for maintaining public trust, the retention of officers with dubious pasts sends a negative message about the priorities of law enforcement.
Allowing repeated offenders to stay in the force can lead to a culture of impunity where officials may feel emboldened to act without consequence, further harming the image and effectiveness of the police.
Goa deserves a law enforcement agency that prioritizes the integrity of its personnel and the safety of its citizens.
The ongoing saga surrounding PI Gudlar must serve as a rallying cry for comprehensive reform and a commitment to eradicating corruption within the ranks. The people of Goa are watching, and they deserve justice, accountability, and a police force that protects, rather than exploits, its residents.
