New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah intensified the political battle in West Bengal with a strong warning to the ruling Trinamool Congress over alleged post poll violence, just days before voting begins in the state.
Addressing a campaign gathering, Shah cautioned that any attempt to intimidate or harm citizens after the elections would invite strict action. He issued a direct warning to those he described as party workers involved in violence, stating that law enforcement would respond firmly if such incidents occurred. He also urged restraint during polling, particularly in sensitive regions, emphasising that any disruption would have consequences.
Alongside his criticism, Shah outlined several welfare promises aimed at appealing to key voter groups. He said that financial assistance would be provided to women and unemployed youth, with monthly support planned across the state, including hill regions. He also spoke about initiatives such as building schools in tea garden areas, granting land rights to workers, and increasing wages over time.
Focusing on the long standing concerns of the Gorkha community in Darjeeling, Shah accused the state government of failing to engage in meaningful dialogue. He said efforts had been made at the national level to address these issues, including consultations with representatives from the region, and promised a resolution if his party comes to power.
The Home Minister also criticised the state government’s allocation of funds, alleging imbalance in spending across different regions and communities. He further raised concerns over women’s safety, citing incidents that have drawn public attention and calling for stricter action against offenders.
The remarks come as campaigning reaches a peak ahead of the first phase of polling. West Bengal is set for a closely fought contest, with the Trinamool Congress seeking to retain power and the Bharatiya Janata Party pushing to expand its influence. Voting will take place in phases, with counting scheduled early next month.
