The core mission of the police is to control crime. No one disputes this. However, shockingly despite the police claiming night patrolling, there have been cases of thefts and robberies during the night.
Only blaming the police would not help either; as far as the Khandola temple is concerned, there was no security. Even though the door was locked, there was a need for security simply because there was so much quantity of gold.
Secondly, thieves knew very well where the DVR of the CCTV camera was placed and hence after the robbery, they decamped even with the DVR.
The police also need to question the committee why so much gold was kept in the open without any security, which seemed like an open invitation to the robbers.

With just about 10 days left for Goa’s biggest festival of Hindus, the Ganesh Chaturthi, the news of the spate of robberies in Ponda taluka has shocked every Goan.
This is simply because most Goan families celebrate the Ganesh festival together at ancestral houses, and thus the flats and houses in cities are locked for at least five days.
With the kind of robberies reported in Ponda, the Goans are in two minds about whether to celebrate Ganesh at an ancestral place or guard their houses.
In the past, we have seen police increasing the patrolling during the Ganesh festival, but the situation now seems grim with the thieves striking at will even in temples and ATMs, and police are left searching for clues to nab the culprits.

The police also need to question the committee why so much gold was kept in the open without any security, which seemed like an open invitation to the robbers.
Why was the gold not removed every evening and saved in a safe locker every night?
As regards the ATM theft at Usgao, one wonders where were the security personnel. We see so many security personnel in the city ATMs, then why is there no security in secluded places? The banks need to answer this question.
Now with Ganesh fast approaching, it would be the worst nightmare for Goans.
It is imperative for those leaving houses to inform the police in advance and ask for added patrolling.
Goa Police also has to appeal to people to be careful and take a few precautions during the Ganesh festival that will commence on August 31.
Hindus celebrate Ganesh at their ancestral houses; therefore, many living in apartments in cities and towns lock the same to visit their ancestral houses wherever they are.
As the houses are locked, and many neighbouring occupants are not there, it is a bonanza for thieves and the number of housebreaking cases spiralled during this period.
People who will be locking their houses and going away during the period must inform the police about the location of the houses while also requesting the neighbours to keep a watch.
