PERNEM: Farmers in Pernem taluka whose crops have been extensively damaged due to the movement of elephant ‘Omkar’ are still awaiting compensation for their losses, even as the administration makes elaborate arrangements for the upcoming inauguration of the renovated Patradevi Memorial.
The contrast has drawn criticism from affected farmers, who questioned why the administration is able to make prompt arrangements for VIP security and facilities but has not shown the same urgency in addressing their concerns.
Farmer Shashikant Mahale questioned how long farmers whose crops have been damaged by the elephant would have to wait for financial assistance and protection.
“Many facilities and security arrangements are being provided for VIPs, but what about us farmers? Who will provide protection to us?” Mahale questioned.
The movement of elephant ‘Omkar’ has caused damage to agricultural crops in parts of Pernem, leaving farmers seeking compensation and effective measures to prevent further losses.
While damage assessments and the process for providing compensation are expected to be undertaken by the authorities, affected farmers say they are still being made to wait for assistance.
Mahale alleged that the administration needs to give greater priority to the problems faced by farmers in Pernem taluka, particularly as incidents involving crop damage continue.
“The machinery works promptly for VIP security, but why is the same urgency not seen when it comes to protecting farmers and providing compensation for their losses?” he questioned.
Farmers are now demanding immediate compensation for the damaged crops along with permanent measures to protect agricultural fields from wild animals and prevent further losses.
