PANAJI: Eleven fishermen were rescued after their fishing canoe capsized in rough seas off Majorda beach on Sunday morning, following a swift and coordinated operation by Drishti Marine lifesavers.
According to Drishti Marine, the canoe had departed from Velsao earlier in the day and was returning to shore with its catch when its engine failed amid rough sea conditions. A large wave overturned the vessel, throwing all 11 fishermen into the water.
Drishti Marine lifesavers immediately launched a rescue operation, deploying jet skis from neighbouring beaches, including Colva, Betalbatim and Arossim. All 11 fishermen, who were wearing life jackets, were safely rescued.
One 50-year-old fisherman from Odisha experienced breathing difficulties after the incident. He was administered oxygen at the scene before being shifted to hospital in a 108 ambulance. He is reported to be in stable condition. The remaining fishermen escaped without injuries.
Drishti Marine reminded the public that sea conditions along Goa’s coastline remain dangerous during the monsoon, with strong winds and rough waters making swimming unsafe. Swimming continues to be prohibited at the state’s beaches during this period.
The agency has deployed more than 480 trained lifesavers and beach marshals across Goa’s major beaches, waterfalls and four inland water bodies to respond to emergencies and assist visitors.
