New Delhi: Thirteen Indian nationals have lost their lives and three others remain missing in the Gulf region since the conflict in West Asia erupted in February this year, according to government sources. The casualties come as renewed military strikes have heightened tensions, raising fresh concerns over maritime security and the safety of Indian citizens working in the region.
The conflict, which began on February 28, has involved Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other. The continuing hostilities have disrupted shipping routes and energy supply chains, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
India has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation and reiterated its demand for safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as vital for global trade, energy security and economic stability.
The latest concerns follow attacks on two commercial vessels, MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, while they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The two ships carried a combined crew of 46, including 30 Indian seafarers.
Among the 12 Indians aboard MT Al Bahiyah, one crew member was killed and another sustained injuries. On MT Mombasa, nine of the 18 Indian crew members were injured, with two reported to be in serious condition.
India has strongly condemned the attacks and lodged a formal protest with Iran after summoning its Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi. Authorities also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured assistance to the injured through Indian missions in the United Arab Emirates.
The government has once again urged all sides to end the violence and return to dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability in the region. It also stressed that commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted, calling for the immediate restoration of free and secure navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
