New Delhi: Fresh Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have left at least 16 people dead, raising concerns about the future of a recently signed agreement aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and Iran and halting military operations across the region.
The overnight strikes targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon, with the Israeli military confirming that operations were carried out in the area. The attacks coincided with reports of intense fighting involving Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group that has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with Israel along the Lebanese border.
The latest escalation comes only days after a diplomatic agreement was reached to end the Israel-Iran conflict and restore stability across several regional fronts. The deal called for an immediate cessation of military activities, including operations in Lebanon, while also emphasizing respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
However, the renewed violence has cast doubt over the effectiveness of the agreement. Analysts warn that continued military action in Lebanon could undermine efforts to secure a broader regional ceasefire and risk reigniting tensions that the deal was designed to contain.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained a firm stance on security operations, stating that Israeli forces will remain in Lebanon until the threat posed by Hezbollah is eliminated. His position comes as Israel prepares for elections later this year, adding a political dimension to the ongoing security situation.
The strikes also affected diplomatic efforts aimed at establishing a long term settlement. Talks scheduled in Switzerland between Iran and the United States on a permanent resolution to the conflict were delayed amid the deteriorating situation. A planned visit by US Vice President JD Vance to lead the discussions was also postponed.
The peace agreement between Israel and Iran was signed earlier this week and took immediate effect. However, the latest developments suggest that significant challenges remain before a lasting peace can be secured, with Lebanon once again emerging as a critical flashpoint in the region’s complex security landscape.
