New Delhi: All 24 Indian crew members aboard an oil tanker were rescued safely after a fire broke out on the vessel near the Omani coast, prompting an emergency evacuation operation in waters close to the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
According to maritime authorities, the incident occurred while the tanker was operating in the Arabian Sea near one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors. Following reports of the fire onboard, an emergency response was initiated and the entire crew was evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Officials confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries among the Indian seafarers. The rescued crew members are safe and are receiving the necessary support and assistance from relevant authorities.
The Directorate General of Shipping stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in coordination with maritime agencies and local authorities to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigations have been launched to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The development has drawn attention due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass. Any security incident in the region often raises concerns about the safety of international shipping and the stability of global energy supplies.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and increased scrutiny of maritime security in the Gulf. Over recent months, commercial vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz have faced various security challenges, including reported attacks, fires and other disruptions, prompting shipping operators and governments to enhance precautionary measures.
Authorities are also examining reports related to distress signals transmitted from vessels operating in the area around the time of the incident. However, no official conclusions have been reached regarding the circumstances that led to the fire.
Indian officials have assured that they remain in regular contact with the crew and concerned agencies to ensure the welfare of the seafarers. Further details are expected to emerge as investigations progress and maritime authorities complete their assessment of the incident.
