PANAJI: Marking Goa Revolution Day with a blend of remembrance and development-focused announcements, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 27 children of freedom fighters, announced the establishment of five new colleges under the National Education Policy (NEP), and reiterated the government’s commitment to diversifying Goa’s tourism sector.
Paying tributes to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Dr. Juliao Menezes and the martyrs of Goa’s liberation struggle at Azad Maidan, the Chief Minister said the state remains indebted to those who fought for Goa’s freedom and pledged continued support to their families.
In a significant welfare measure, Dr. Sawant handed over appointment letters to 27 children of freedom fighters and stated that nearly 70 per cent of eligible beneficiaries have received government jobs during the tenure of the present administration.
The Chief Minister also honoured the contribution of the media to Goa’s liberation movement by felicitating Kesari and Tarun Bharat newspapers for amplifying the voice of the freedom struggle. He further announced financial assistance of ₹10 lakh to the family of freedom fighter Baburao Thorat from Chandrapur, Maharashtra.
Looking ahead, Dr. Sawant said Goa is investing heavily in education and skill development, announcing plans to establish five new colleges under the NEP framework. The institutions will focus on specialised areas including law, forensic science, digital education and skill-based learning to prepare students for emerging opportunities.
The Chief Minister also outlined the government’s vision to transform Goa into a year-round tourism destination by promoting heritage, eco, wellness, spiritual and hinterland tourism alongside its traditional beach tourism offerings.
He said the twin focus on quality education and diversified tourism would help create employment opportunities, build skilled manpower and drive sustainable economic growth.
The announcements came as Goa observed Revolution Day, commemorating the historic 1946 movement that ignited the struggle against Portuguese rule and paved the way for the state’s liberation.
