PONDA: In a initiative by Green Army Foundation in response to Central Government appeal it has been decided to clean up 55 beaches in Goa on Saturday 17 September for two hours between 7 am to 9 am with participation of around 4500 members of various NGOs on occasion of International Cleanup Day.
Addressing to media members of Green Army Foundation at Ponda Charan Desai President of Green Army Manohar Gaonkar and others addressing to media said that at a time Central Government has decided to create 7500 km long coastal cleanup awareness in India and awareness was done since past two months.
41 NGOs are participating beside college students , self help groups. Charan further said since Goans depend upon beaches for their livelihood it is important to maintain the beaches and water bodies clean , not only for one day but entire year.
The Green Army members from Ponda would clean up four beaches while rest of participants would join other beaches for cleanup drive. We will try to segregate plastic and beer bottles and Panchayats , Tourism Department and Reliance Foundation also assured to carry this garbage for disposal.
Tomorrow on 17 at 7 pm Governor of Goa would present Miramar Beach to launch programme , NGOs will bear the cost incurred in drive with hand gloves , garbage bags and water bottles would be provided.
The tourism related beaches like Miramar and other would be joined with 200 members for cleanup while the those beaches with less footfalls would be cleaned up by around 20 Members . He said the awareness would be continued through out year and we will also reach to school students .
