VASCO: The Bharat Scouts and Guides marked the 17th year of their unique rafting adventure at Vaddem Lake, involving 560 students from 15 schools in Mormugao Taluka and one special invitee school, Mandrem High School from North Goa’s Mandrem constituency on Wednesday morning.
The event aims to foster teamwork, resilience, and outdoor skills among young participants while encouraging a spirit of adventure and community engagement. The initiative has become a hallmark of the Mormugao district Bharat Scouts and Guides Association, being the only district in Goa to organize such an activity.
“This is a very unique initiative because no other district in Goa organizes such events,” said Antonio D’Souza of the Mormugao District Bharat Scouts and Guides Association. “We are proud to host this event for the 17th year. All safety measures have been implemented, including life jackets and the presence of a lifeguard, ensuring the children’s safety. It’s heartening to see 560 students participating this year, with Mandrem High School joining us as a special invitee.”
Highlighting the purpose of the activity, Sergio Peroz of the association emphasized its value in removing fear and preparing students for emergencies. “The rafting activity is designed to eradicate the fear of water from the minds of students. It also equips them with essential skills for emergency situations, like floods,” he explained.
“Students are taught various knots and lashings, which are crucial for tying bamboos and empty bottles to create rafts during emergencies. These skills can help them not only survive but also save others in challenging situations,” added Peroz.
“The event continues to receive enthusiastic participation and reinforces the Bharat Scouts and Guides’ commitment to building a confident and prepared youth community in Goa.” Said Peroz
