PORVORIM: Former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal has announced that he will approach the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court’s verdict in the 2013 rape case after reviewing the complete judgment.
Reacting to the ruling, Tejpal alleged that the case was the result of a “13-year political vendetta” arising from Tehelka’s investigative journalism. He said he has confidence in the judicial process and believes that the truth will emerge.
Tejpal stated that he would not make detailed comments on the verdict until he has gone through the High Court’s order in full.
The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court recently set aside the trial court’s 2021 acquittal and convicted Tejpal in the case, awarding him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹5 lakh.
The High Court has allowed him two weeks to surrender. Tejpal’s legal team has indicated that the conviction will be challenged before the Supreme Court.
