VASCO: A 62-year-old scooter rider was killed in a tragic accident after a huge roadside tree suddenly crashed onto the busy Matve–Dabolim–Vasco road on Wednesday, triggering panic among commuters and causing major traffic disruption.
The deceased has been identified as Francisco Nunes, a resident of Jetty, Sada.
According to preliminary information, Nunes was riding his scooter along the road when the massive tree unexpectedly uprooted and fell directly onto him, trapping both the rider and his two-wheeler beneath it.
He sustained grievous injuries and died in the incident.
The accident brought traffic to a standstill on the busy stretch as shocked motorists alerted the authorities. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, along with police and other agencies, rushed to the spot and launched an operation to cut and remove the fallen tree.
After considerable effort, the tree was cleared from the road and traffic movement was gradually restored.
The body was shifted for medico-legal formalities, while police have initiated an inquiry into the incident. The exact cause of the tree collapse is yet to be determined, and officials are investigating whether adverse weather conditions or the tree’s condition contributed to the tragedy.
