New Delhi: In the strife-torn state of Manipur, where ethnic violence has ravaged communities since May 2023, the administration is pushing for a swift resolution to the illegal arms crisis. On February 20, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla issued a seven-day ultimatum for the surrender of looted and illegally held weapons, promising no punitive action during this period. This move comes as part of broader efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
Manipur Chief Secretary PK Singh recently emphasized that the seven-day timeframe is sufficient for those willing to give up arms. “If one decides to give up arms, it can be done in a day. After that period, we will go and take such weapons from them,” Singh stated during an event in Imphal. The administration’s stance is clear: weapons should not be in the hands of unauthorized individuals, as they pose a significant threat to societal safety.
The ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced. The imposition of President’s rule on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, has added to the political uncertainty. Despite these challenges, there is a growing desire among the populace for peace. “Opening the highways, bringing normalcy, and some kind of confidence-building on both sides are important,” Singh noted, highlighting the need for collective understanding and resolution.
