New Delhi: Hours after the BJP formally accepted his resignation from the party’s primary membership, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai announced plans to launch a new political movement, describing it as a significant step in his evolving political journey.
Addressing the media on Friday, Annamalai reflected on his years in public life and said that entering politics as an ordinary citizen had been a major achievement in itself. He described his six year association with the BJP as a valuable period of learning and experience but indicated that his political ambitions had now expanded beyond the framework of the party.
According to Annamalai, there is a growing need for a political model capable of delivering meaningful and lasting change. He argued that politics should move away from being centred around individual personalities and instead focus on addressing the concerns and aspirations of ordinary people.
Recalling the early stages of his political career, Annamalai said he initially joined the party founded by late actor and politician Vijayakanth as an intern to gain exposure and understanding of public life. He later joined the BJP and continued his work in politics and public service through the party.
The former BJP leader stressed that his departure should not be viewed as a confrontation or conflict. He said that expressing one’s views openly and then parting ways respectfully is consistent with Tamil cultural values and democratic traditions.
Signalling his future plans, Annamalai declared that a new political movement rooted in his core principles would soon take shape. He said the initiative aims to introduce a fresh dimension to politics while maintaining a strong focus on the development and progress of Tamil Nadu.
Annamalai also shared a personal anecdote from his entry into the BJP, revealing that actor Rajinikanth had congratulated him when he joined the party. He added that Rajinikanth had invited him to be part of his own political movement shortly before he formally entered the BJP, but he ultimately chose the BJP path.
Looking ahead, Annamalai announced that he intends to contest the 2031 elections independently, marking the beginning of what could be a significant new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
