MARGAO: In the wake of the United States deported 116 Indian nationals, including two from Goa, a local lawmaker has underscored the compelling reasons behind the youths’ decision to migrate illegally. The deportees, who were flown back to India on a US military C-17 aircraft, landed at Amritsar airport late Friday night, with the two Goans returning to Dabolim airport on Sunday.
Venzy Viegas, the Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Goa’s Velim constituency, emphasized that the lengthy and cumbersome process of obtaining valid documents for legal migration drives many youths to seek illicit routes. “One of the two Goans deported from the US is from my Velim assembly seat. I spoke to his father, and it’s clear that the boy was driven by the desire for a job abroad,” Viegas explained.
Viegas highlighted the need for governmental intervention to streamline the documentation process. “The government must address this issue of lengthy documentation. I will discuss this with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to find a solution,” he added. The plight of these youths underscores the broader challenge of illegal migration, where individuals often fall prey to fraudulent agents and endure perilous journeys in pursuit of better opportunities.
