PANAJI: Goa Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Subhash Shirodkar has announced that the government will begin action against illegal borewells from August, reiterating his strong opposition to the unchecked drilling of borewells across the state.
Speaking to reporters, Shirodkar said the department is committed to protecting groundwater resources and will take strict action against unauthorized borewells to ensure sustainable water management.
The minister also revealed that the WRD is preparing a new scheme aimed at storing adequate water in dams during the month of May. The initiative is intended to improve water conservation and maintain sufficient reserves to meet the state’s needs during the peak summer months.
Shirodkar said the plan is focused on ensuring better management of available water resources so that there is enough stored water for at least the following two months, reducing the risk of shortages during periods of high demand.
Addressing concerns over the current water situation, the minister assured that Goa is not facing any water scarcity at present. He said recent monsoon rains have significantly improved water levels in the state’s dams, providing adequate supplies for domestic and other essential requirements.
The WRD, he added, will continue monitoring reservoir levels while implementing measures to strengthen long-term water security and encourage responsible use of groundwater across the state.
