CANACONA: PWD (Highways) in a show of responsibility, has taken up the filling of Level-Difference of the recently Hot-mixed narrow section of Gulem NH-66 road on a war footing.
PWD has recently completed the Hot-mixing carpeting of NH66 road from Gulem to Cuncolim and was levelling road height differences as to space between the road and setback. In most places, the height of the road has increased following the laying of fresh hot-mix carpet.
PWD was, in fact, taken up the roadside to bury the level difference from the Barcem side of Karmalghat.
And following the fatal accident involving an Inter-State Luxury Bus and a 2-Wheeler leaving two dead and two critical early mornings of Tuesday, have begun Soling of the roadside at Gulem (at the site of the accident) from Wednesday.
Following mishaps and accidents chronically occurring at the narrow Gulem section NH66 road, including the accident-prone sharp curve at Karmalghat, residents and activists have blamed the authorities for failing to take corrective measures in this road section.
A PWD (Highways) source informed that ongoing works are old work, which was carried out in the Karmalghat section.
“However, following the major accident on Tuesday, we have decided to instead first complete the soling and remove the level difference of the NH66 road at Gulem. Incidentally, we can do it (fill-up level difference) only on one side of the highway. This is not new but part of Hot-mix works, which is being completed”, officials said\.
Sources informed that the removal of level-difference and soling of the entire route (narrow NH-66 Guleem section) will be taken up as part of the approved finances (cost of Rs.3.82 Cr), which includes Road-Widening, levelling from Gulem to Karmalghat including the widening of Sharp and treacherous accident-prone Curve at Karmalghat.
The technical bid opening was slated for 25-04-2023(Tuesday).
