CANACONA: In a rare honour, Sarpanch of Village panchayat Agonda Prettal Fernandes hailed as youngest sarpanch of the village, represented Goa at the World Environment Day (WED-2023) Celebrations, at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Monday.
World Environment Day 2023 is celebrated with a thrust on Mission Life.
The function organised by MoEFCC was attended and addressed by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the function through video conferencing.
Incidentally, this year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’.
Agonda Grampanchayat is the lone and only panchayat from Goa State shortlisted for the ‘Clean & Green’ Category amongst the shortlisting of 100 odd Gram panchayats in different categories nationwide.
According to a communiqué by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, New Delhi, Agonda Gram Panchayat is the only panchayat from Goa which shortlisted for the National Panchayat Awards-2023 for the category ‘Clean and Green’. Incidentally, 100-gram Panchayats from most of the States in the country are nominated for the National Panchayat Awards-2023 for the categories of ‘Clean & Green’, ‘Urja Swaraj’ and ‘Carbon Neutral’.
On the directions of MoEFCC to the Chief Secretary, the Director of Panchayat issued an order, and Canacona BDO nominated Agonda Sarpanch Miss Prettal Fernandes to attend the World Environment Day celebrations at New Delhi on Monday.
Incidentally, while there are as many as 80 Grampanchayats which are nominated in the ‘Green & Clean’ Category, 13- Gram Panchayats are nominated in the Carbon Neutral Category, and 7 other Gram Panchayats are nominated in the Urja Swaraj category or the respective awards.
While Agonda Gram Panchayat is the lone panchayat nominated from Goa State for one of the three categories, Odisha and Telangana have their nine(9) Grampanchayats nominated, while Maharashtra has Eight (8) Grampanchayat as the maximum number of nominations from one State.
The other nominations are Andaman & Nicobar Islands (3), Andhra Pradesh (3), Arunachal Pradesh(3), Assam (3), Bihar(3), Chhattisgarh (3), Gujarat(3), J&K(3), Himachal Pradesh(2) Jharkhand (1), Karnataka (3), Kerala(4), Ladakh (3), Madhya Pradesh (2), Manipur (3), Mizoram (3) Nagaland (3), Punjab (3), Rajasthan (1), Sikkim (3), Tamil Nadu (1), The Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (3), Tripura(4), Uttar Pradesh(5), Uttarakhand (2) and West Bengal (3).
