CANACONA: As the Republic Day nears, Karnataka has tightened its borders curbing entry of any sorts of illegalities into the State and have even deployed sniffer dogs into service to assist the police and excise sleuths at its Majali checkpost in the southernmost Canacona taluka of Goa at Polem. .
Karnataka’s Majali Checkpost border at Goa’s southernmost exit point beyond Polem border in Canacona is litrarily turned into a fortress guarded by Karnataka Police and Excise sleuths.
A sniffer dog reportedly trained in detecting Bombs, Ammunition, Narcotics, Liquor and any other illegal substances (considered to be a threat to life and property) in cross-border transportation is pressed into service, as policemen and Excise sleuths check on every vehicle big or small entering the Kanada State from and through Goa at Polem border Checkpost.
Powerful and compulsory checking of every vehicle coming through Goa’s Polem checkpost is checked by the Dog squad in the presence of Police and Excise sleuths of Karnataka. All Two-Wheelers and Four wheelers, and all the light and heavy vehicles entering via Polem border are thoroughly checked first manually and again with the help of Sniffer Dog for any Drugs or Narcotics substances, Bombs or any combustible substances, Liquor. Etc.
While not even sparing family Cars, all the passengers and their baggage travelling in public transports including Kadamba Transport Corporation inter-state Buses are not spared.
Incidentally, Karnataka police stops every vehicle and lines-up them in the common land between the two border posts (Majali – Polem checkposts) of both the State’s, before subjecting the vehicles to thorough physical checking and then let the sniffer dogs to smell presence of any illegal and unwanted substances including Bombs, Fire-Substances, Drugs and even Liquor. The police personnel are also seen noting down the vehicle registration numbers entering the State from Goa.
It is learnt from Karnataka sources, the security at the borders have been tightened in view of the fast approaching Republic Day, and borders with the other State’s particularly the State’s governed by other political party’s are virtually kept on high alert for fear of spearheading sabotages or bringing in any type of illegalities such as bombs, ammunitions, drugs or liquors which could disturb the peace or trigger trouble in the State, added the source.
According to reports, in a recent development Karnataka Excise Department has reportedly deployed drones in some strategic locations on the border areas shared with Goa State for keeping a check of illegal transportation of liquor particularly through dense forest route or through Sea from Goa to Karnataka.-
