PANAJI: Before the code of conduct takes effect, the Goa government is considering installing AI-enabled cameras at 91 locations throughout the state to penalize traffic infractions.
Prior to the implementation of the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections, steps are also being taken to address 12 areas of concern throughout the state.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho called a meeting of all parties involved due to an increase in accidents in the state. Attending the meeting were representatives from the Collectorate, PWD, and Transport Department.
Rent-a-cab drivers have been instructed to strictly enforce the use of speed governors, and the vehicles will be impounded following two major infractions. At the moment, only Merces and Dona Paula have AI-enabled traffic camera installations.
“We have received instructions to address the 12 identified blackspots prior to the implementation of the election code of conduct,” he stated.
Regarding rental cars, it’s important to make sure they have speed governors installed or not. They need to be installed as soon as possible if they aren’t already. If this isn’t completed, we’ll see that the RTO or the police seize the cars. We will now impound the vehicle in the event that two serious offenses occur. We won’t put up with this careless and reckless driving,” he declared.
Godinho stated that action has also been ordered to be taken by the Department of Transport to stop traffic accidents in the State.
He stated that numerous taxi operators do not utilize the digital meters, and the government will make a decision regarding their installation.
The Minister claimed that when renting out their cars to visitors, the companies are not adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
